With the advancement in technology, the construction industry is also changing for the better with renewable sources. As such, most construction companies are now focusing on renewable building practices.

The construction industry involves the production of raw materials to the construction itself, and as such, it takes an integral part of energy consumption. A recent research by the US Department of Energy confirms this to be accurate as forty percent of the country’s building sector is energy consumption.

In practice, that approximation is equivalent to 97 quads, which is 19 percent of the entire world energy consumption. Moreover, operation and utilities take about 90 percent of the building process lifespan.

Therefore, to counterbalance this number and adopt more eco-friendly building practices, construction companies across the globe are shifting to renewable sources on construction.

Photovoltaic is a top-notch renewable energy source for construction. PV energy production exhibits tons of benefits:

  • The PV system provides unlimited solar energy that’s available across the globe.
  • It does not discharge greenhouse gases or any pollutants, thus eco-friendly.
  • PV panels cause no sound pollution.
  • PV systems are easy to maintain.

To enhance renewable technology, the cost of PV systems has decreased immensely over the past few decades, and with change comes new standards.

This renewable source of construction is ideal for buildings with unexploited rooftops so they can occupy the space. The parking lot may be used as an alternative to protect the cars from direct sunlight and rain. Integrating PV systems into the building premises is also another way of installing them.

Many studies, however, have proven technical possibilities to achieve the net-zero energy objectives by using photovoltaics to cover fifty percent of their rooftops. In fact, this could lead to more energy production than they consume.

Such depends on several frameworks, including the location, the number of floors the building has, its primary use, process loads, among others. Warehouse, education, and retail facilities are also a significant contributor to the net-zero building goals.

It is worth noting that cogeneration isn’t a renewable technology, but a compelling perspective to energy efficiency. Besides, the CHP systems employ renewable technologies as a principal source. Biomass and geothermal energy are some of the possible fuels that enhance the production of electrical power, and as such, cogeneration integrates renewable sources on construction.

Wind turbines are another leading renewable energy source. However, they are not preferred for use on rooftops or car parks due to their potential energy consumption. And if prompted to, they are characterized to a production capacity not exceeding 10kW.

Wind turbines are designed for areas with constant wind flow, and as such, you can find them on open hills, plains, near the sea, offshores or in a collection of wind turbines that forms a wind farm.

Sadly, wind conditions in the urban environments are often turbulent, significantly decreasing the efficiency of the wind turbines. The wind turbines contribute to noise pollution due to the vibration, making it a challenge to use in buildings.

However, there have been continuous efforts to develop smaller-scale wind turbines precisely for urban environments, which could be of more significant effect to urban areas.

Renewable energy sources emit carbon dioxide as free electrical energy; however, the production varies depending on weather conditions.

Not to worry, though, because, with the electrical energy storage systems, storage of renewable sources is possible. You can use the stored energy during low productions, especially if the demand exceeds production.

Besides, the electrical storage system has more to offer than energy storage. It enables tons of features including energy optimization, voltage and frequency support, building’s electrical operation system, among others.

As mentioned before, in renewable energy advantages, renewable energy technologies require minimal maintenance compared to generators that operate on traditional fuel sources. This is because energy technologies, such as solar panels and wind turbines, don’t rely on artificial sources to run. Therefore, minimal maintenance translates to better value for money and time.

One of the critical factors doing construction projects is cost. Nearly everyone is aiming at saving some money, and renewable sources on construction can help you save money. Renewable sources will not just help you save money on maintenance costs, but operation costs too.

Sure, you don’t have to keep recharging or refuelling using money when you are using renewable energy, such as the sun, steam, wind, or any other natural processes.

But the amount of money you will save when using renewable energy depends on a ton of factors, which include technology. Usually, the hassle comes during transitioning as this is likely to help you save hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
